What the Job Looks Like: Sell, Build, Collect
Every claim you handle moves through three stages. Here is what you own at each one.
Sell
- 1Set the inspection. Book a time to inspect the homeowner's roof.
- 2Inspect and sign. Get on the roof, document every bit of damage with photos, and sign the agreement.
- 3Meet the adjuster. Be on the roof when the insurance adjuster arrives and walk them through the damage you documented.
Build
- 4Review the paperwork. Sit down with the homeowner, go over the claim, and agree on the scope and price.
- 5Write the work order. Hand our crew a clear, complete order.
- 6Build the job. Stay involved until the new roof is on and the site is clean.
Collect
- 7Invoice the insurer. Send the final invoice to release the recoverable depreciation.
- 8Collect the first check. Pick up the ACV (actual cash value) check and the homeowner's deductible.
- 9Close it out. Collect the depreciation and close the file.
Tools of the Trade
Show up equipped and you will work faster and look the part.
- A dedicated work phone. When it rings, it is a customer, a lead, an adjuster or a mortgage company, so you always answer. It also keeps your phone bill separate at tax time. Save every homeowner's name so you can greet them by name.
- A 22-ft ladder. Reaches most two-story homes. No truck yet? A folding ladder like a Little Giant or Xtend fits in a car.
- Business cards. Name, title, phone and email. You will write appointment times on them, leave them with neighbors, hand them to adjusters, and give extras to happy customers for referrals.
- Soapstone. Marks hail and wind damage cleanly, costs next to nothing, and outlasts chalk.
- A 30-ft or longer tape measure.
- A claim binder. Keep the original paperwork for every claim organized in one place.
- The uniform. Khaki pants (or khaki shorts in peak summer), a clean company polo and good work boots.
- A truck, ideally. Not required to start, but it hauls leftover material and a full-size ladder, and it looks professional.
How We Generate Leads: Door Knocking Done Right
After a hail or wind storm, Middle Tennessee neighborhoods fill up fast with out-of-town trucks, yard signs and salesmen. Here is how our reps stand out and book more inspections with fewer doors.
Win the First Five Seconds
A homeowner judges you before you say a word. Most people picture a roofer as rough around the edges, so looking sharp puts you ahead immediately. Wear the uniform and keep it clean. Keep a fresh shirt, deodorant and gum in your vehicle for hot days. Wear a lanyard with your company ID so people know who you are. Never smoke in the neighborhood you are working. No loud music, no speeding. You are a guest on their street.
Knock Smarter, Not Longer
We do not believe in 100 doors a day in the freezing rain. Our system is built on six parts: knock when people are home (weekdays 5 to 8 pm, weekends morning and early afternoon, wrap up by 8:30 pm); set a specific goal (roughly 1 in 10 conversations becomes an appointment); track every door; lead with a relaxed approach; offer two times instead of a yes-or-no question; and firm it up before you leave the porch.
Setting the Appointment
Rule one: do not sell at the door. You are there to book an inspection, nothing more. Rule two: do not inspect on the spot. Scheduling it shows you are in demand and proves you are reliable when you show up on time. Stay relaxed, offer two times, and get every decision-maker there. Our door approach: 'Hi, how is it going? I am ___ with 4 Square Roofing, right here in Hendersonville. The storm on [date] left damage on a number of roofs on this street, so we are doing free inspections for neighbors this week. Would 5:00 or 6:30 work better Monday?'
Why Sell with 4 Square Roofing
- GAF Certified and Allstate Preferred, so homeowners trust the name on your shirt
- Based in Hendersonville and serving Sumner County and Greater Nashville
- Hands-on training in our inspection, door-knocking and claim process
