How to Spot Storm Damage on Your Roof Before It Becomes a Major Problem

Middle Tennessee is no stranger to severe weather. From spring hailstorms to summer thunderstorms with high winds, the Nashville area and surrounding communities like Hendersonville, Gallatin, and Goodlettsville take a beating every year. The problem is that roof damage is not always obvious from the ground, and many homeowners do not discover a problem until water is already coming through the ceiling. By that point, what could have been a straightforward repair has turned into a much more expensive project involving decking, insulation, and interior finishes. The good news is that if you know what to look for, you can catch storm damage early and get it addressed before it escalates.

Missing or Displaced Shingles

The most visible sign of storm damage is missing shingles. High winds can lift shingles off the roof entirely, or partially displace them so they are no longer lying flat. Even a single missing shingle creates an entry point for water. After any significant storm, walk around the perimeter of your home and look up at the roofline. If you can see bare patches, dark spots, or shingles that are curled or lifted at the edges, those areas need attention. You may also find shingle pieces in your yard or gutters, which is a clear indicator that the wind was strong enough to cause damage.

Granule Loss in Your Gutters

Asphalt shingles are coated with small mineral granules that protect the underlying asphalt from UV rays and add fire resistance. When shingles are struck by hail or subjected to heavy rain, they shed these granules. After a storm, check your gutters and downspout discharge areas. If you see a significant accumulation of dark, sand-like granules, your shingles have taken a hit. Some granule loss is normal on older roofs, but a sudden large deposit after a storm is a red flag. Shingles that have lost their granule coating will deteriorate much faster and are more susceptible to cracking and leaking.

Hail Dents and Impact Marks

Hail damage can be subtle and is often missed by homeowners doing a ground-level inspection. On asphalt shingles, hail strikes typically leave circular dents or soft spots where the granules have been knocked away, exposing the dark asphalt beneath. On metal components like flashing, gutters, and vents, hail leaves visible dents. If your neighbors are filing insurance claims after a hailstorm, there is a very good chance your roof was affected too. Hail damage is one of the most common reasons for insurance claims in Middle Tennessee, and it is also one of the most frequently missed because the damage is not always dramatic-looking from the outside.

Damaged or Lifted Flashing

Flashing is the metal material installed around roof penetrations like chimneys, skylights, and vents, as well as along roof valleys and wall intersections. It is designed to direct water away from these vulnerable areas. Storm winds can lift or separate flashing from the roof surface, breaking the seal and creating a direct path for water intrusion. Flashing damage is one of the leading causes of roof leaks and is often overlooked because it does not look as dramatic as missing shingles. If you notice water stains on your ceiling near a chimney or skylight after a storm, damaged flashing is a likely culprit.

Interior Water Stains and Attic Moisture

Sometimes the first sign of storm damage shows up inside your home rather than on the roof. Water stains on ceilings or walls, particularly after a storm, are a strong indicator that water is getting in somewhere. Check your attic after heavy rain or hail. Look for wet insulation, water droplets on the underside of the decking, or daylight coming through the roof boards. Catching these signs early can prevent mold growth and structural damage that would significantly increase the cost of repairs.
